What does it really feel like to teach Spanish for over 15 years? In this post, I share my journey from nervous beginner to passionate educator, exploring the emotional connections that transcend language and the profound joy of guiding students as they learn to narrate their lives in a new tongue.
More than 15 years ago, I began teaching Spanish as a second language. At first, I was very nervous about teaching people who didn't speak my language. Little by little, however, I became more confident, built meaningful connections with my students, and, before I knew it, I had stepped into a world that has inspired and fulfilled me ever since.
I love meeting people from different backgrounds and sharing in their life stories. I also treasure the silent conversations I have learned to recognize—those moments when, even without a common language, I can understand my students and see their emotions as they face the challenge of learning Spanish.
But what I enjoy most is knowing that I am helping them tell their own stories in a new language. Being able to guide them, walk alongside them, and support them throughout this exciting journey of learning Spanish is the greatest reward of all.
Hace más de 15 años empecé a enseñar español como segunda lengua. Al principio estaba muy nerviosa por enseñar a personas que no hablaban mi idioma. Sin embargo, poco a poco fui ganando confianza, conectando con mis estudiantes y, sin darme cuenta, entré en un mundo que me ha apasionado durante todos estos años.
Me encanta conocer a tantas personas y compartir sus historias de vida. También disfruto de esa conversación silenciosa que he aprendido a descubrir, en la que, sin necesidad de un idioma, puedo comprender a mis estudiantes y percibir sus emociones mientras se enfrentan al reto de aprender español.
Pero lo que más disfruto es saber que estoy haciendo posible que ell@s cuenten su propia historia en un nuevo idioma. Me emociona poder guiarl@s, tomarl@s de la mano y acompañarl@s en esta maravillosa aventura de aprender español.
